Its university, fouded in 1218 by King Alfonso IX, is the oldest existing university in Spain today.
Pope Alexander IV claimed it to be one of the four largest universities in the world.
The philisopher and writer Miguel de Unamuno is accredited with the saying: «What nature does not give, Salamanca does not lend», referring to the fact that in Salamanca boasts the best education.
In the famous novel, «Don Quixote de la Mancha», by Miguel de Cervantes, one of the characters Sansón Carrasco, makes reference to the fact that she studied in Salamanca, implying that in Salamanca boasts the best education in Spain.

Education: All 15 yera old students of San Estanislao de Kostka school of Salamanca obtained 540 points in the mathematics evaluation of PISA.
The PISA reading and science assessments were alsa favorable, In reading, the score was 29 points higher than the Spanish average. In science the students obtained an average of 532 points, 39 points higher than the Spanish average.
Another interesting fact that the PISA report published, when the schools' Mathematics average was compared to those of other countries, San Estanislao de Kostka, was 2nd in the World!
